Best Buy stops sale of Russia-based Kaspersky products

(Reuters) – U.S. electronics retailer Best Buy Co said on Friday it was pulling Kaspersky Lab’s cyber security products from its shelves and website, amid concerns that the firm may be vulnerable to Russian government influence.

Best Buy felt there were “too many unanswered questions” and so decided to discontinue selling the antivirus products, according to StarTribune, which first reported the retailer’s decision. (strib.mn/2eLGd5h)

A U.S. congressional panel had asked government agencies to share documents on the Moscow-based cyber security firm, saying its products could be used to carry out “nefarious activities against the United States”, Reuters reported in July

Kaspersky has denied ties with any government and said it would not support cyber espionage.

Best Buy declined to comment on the vendor contract while Kaspersky said the companies had suspended their relationship.
